What is the Runtime Agent?

The Runtime Agent is defined as a Windows Task Manager process that allows you to manage permissions on your computer for Windows Store apps.Since its operation has to do with Cortana, which has already been discontinued, it does not make much sense for it to continue running in Windows 11, so we are going to show you how to get rid of it

Although we have been using Windows for years, it is likely that we do not know some secrets of this operating system. Among them, what is the Runtime Agent. After all, sometimes we don’t mess with their options, so many may go unnoticed, and we only notice them if they have a problem.

Redmond’s own firm defines it as “a Windows Task Manager process that allows you to manage permissions on your computer for Windows Store apps,” and warns that “it should only use a few megabytes of memory, but in some cases, a faulty application can cause the Agent Runtime to use up to a gigabyte of RAM or more«. There are drawbacks, of course.

In either case, the normal Service Host Agent Activation Runtime process is located in the System32 folder. It includes a series of files, which are easily distinguishable, and which have the following names and formats:

How to disable the Agent at runtime?

The thing is, since the Runtime Agent is all about Cortana, and Microsoft Assistant was discontinued in Windows 11, once you’ve upgraded to the latest version of Windows, it doesn’t make any more sense.

From Task Manager

The easiest way to disable Agent Runtime is to do it directly from Task Managerwhich will take you no more than seconds, and will make you forget about it in the future.

Open Task Manager, and switch to the Startup tabUnderneath, locate Cortana, and disable this featureOpen Service ManagerLook for Runtime AgentRight-click on it, and go to PropertiesOf all the available options, you must change the Startup type to Disabled

From Registry Editor

On the other hand, you have the possibility of use a trick from the Registry Editor, which gives the same result:

Open Registry Editor, and navigate to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services In the list, look for entries that appear as “AarSvc” and “AarSvcXYZ” Under AarSvc go to the right pane, and double-click Start , changing the value from 3 to 4, remaining in hexadecimal. 3 refers to Manual Startup, while 4 refers to Disabled Startup. Repeat the same procedure with AarSvcXYZ and restart your computer
