Hegalak is an inclusive sports center located in Donostia-San Sebastián, which has just completed its first 10 years of life. From the beginning, the club placed the accessibility of all people and health as the main focus. “After these first 10 years we can say that the objectives set have been met. 3,566 people have passed through our medical service, and 2,048 people in physiotherapy and osteopathy. In addition, one of the icons is the swimming school where more than 5,000 boys and girls have learned to swim”, they say from the center.

Its manager, Jaione Izagirre, explains that “we opened the doors on June 25, 2012. Hegalak was born as a dream of an inclusive sports center and every day we work to continue achieving it. We have a doctor, physiotherapists, osteopaths and personal trainers in our health area. We have 2 rooms for directed activities and a cycle room, a fitness room, a 25 m pool, a small pool and a spa area”.

Ten years later, says the manager, “some activities have been changed, adjusting them more to our public. We currently have 1,300 associated people, although we have not managed to recover the maximum we had before the pandemic.”

He also values that, “in these 10 years, we have achieved, through different programs, that more people with disabilities become active. We have 13 groups dedicated to sports activation for people with pathologies and for people with disabilities. Keep in mind that all this is possible thanks to our multidisciplinary work team: doctor, physiotherapist, personal trainers and room technicians. At the time of its creation, our sports center had many doubts, but today it is a benchmark”, he adds.

Health as a goal

Hegalak is the first sports center at a national level to obtain the AENOR certificate for accessibility and in this field there are many differences. “Since our beginnings, all our sports equipment and machinery has been constantly changed and modified to adapt to the users. In our health area we had to make a treadmill twice as wide so that people could perform stress tests on a handbike, for example”, he details.

Installing an app to create personal training, the digital activities grid, digital registrations…, etc, are some examples”.
