THE MOST VOTED IN FIRST AND SECOND. From left to right and by virtue of the highest number of registered votes: Peco Mulet, Jordi Aránega and Quim Esteba, in the first category. And Gregori Contreras, Gottfried Schuon and Miquel Àngel Alonso, in the second category.
(3-6-2022). A few hours before the start of the 2022 Senior Sailing Skate Championship of Catalonia, a large sample of the sailors participating in it have voted for the favorites to win through a CMDsport survey. Peco Mulet and Gregorio Contereras, both from Club Natación Badalona, lead the first and second rankings, respectively.
This 2022 Catalan Senior Sailing Skate Championship is expected to be intense. At least, according to the predictions made by 94 sailors participating in the competition who have voted electronically for the favorites to win this year’s edition, based on a selection of patterns prepared by CMDsport.
Where the respondents would have been more unanimous when predicting a favorite has been in the first category. There, the champion of Spain 2022, Peco Mulet, from Club Natación Badalona, has registered up to 62% of citations, which places him in a comfortable first position in the top-10 favorites in this category.
UP TO 7 EX-CHAMPIONS IN THE TOP-10 OF FIRST
It should be noted that in this, there are up to seven sailors already holders of the title of Champion of Catalonia, such as, in addition to the aforementioned Peco Mulet, Albert Batlleriá, from the Club Natació Badalona; Oriol Castellà, from the Sant Antoni Sailing Club; Quim Esteba, from the Club Nàutic Tamariu; Adrià Gabarró, from the Badalona Swimming Club; Pau Gratacós, from the Club Mar i Vent Canet; and Anna Pujol, from the Barcelona Swimming Club.
Only three of the sailors included in the top-10 of first category skippers have not yet registered their name in the list of winners of said competition in the queen category: Jordi Aránega, from Club Marítim Cubelles; Oriol Carrasco, from the Club Nàutic Sant Pol; and Oriol Martí, from Club Patí Vela Barcelona, although the latter already holds the title of Champion of Catalonia in the second category last year.
After Peco Mulet, the second place in the top-10 of first favorites is, precisely, for the third classified of last year’s edition and runner-up of Spain in 2022 (for the second consecutive year), Jordi Aránega, with 38% of citations; while the third corresponds to Quim Esteba, who has registered 33% of references.
THE ‘ARMED’ OF BADALONA
It is noteworthy that within this first-class top-10 there are up to three patrons of the Badalona Swimming Club: Mulet, Batlleriá and the recently incorporated member of the entity, Adrià Gabarró.
Undoubtedly, the ‘army’ of the Badalona Swimming Club seems ready for the title of champion of Catalonia in senior sailing to remain in its headquarters. Not in vain, the still current Champion of Catalonia, that is, the winner of last year’s edition is Pere Crespo, a skater from that entity, who, by the way, due to his late registration, was not included in the selection of sailors to vote on this occasion. Most likely, if Crespo had been included in the list, he would have figured in this top-10.
The affirmation that the Badalona Swimming Club fleet is going for it all in this call for the 2022 Catalan title is ratified because, if up to three sailors are included in the top-10 of first-class favorites, in the top-10 of second-category favorites there are also three and, in addition, two of them occupying the first and second place of the same. These are, on the one hand, the already veteran candidate for victory such as Gregori Contreras, with 42% of citations, as well as his club mate, Gottfried Schuon, with 38% of references. Precisely, Schuon won the unofficial title of Champion of Spain in the second category last April in Formentera. During the first five months of this 2022, both Contreras and Schuon have been ‘sharing’ the victories in the second category of the social trophies of the Badalona Swimming Club and giving more than a ‘scare’ to the recognized first ones who sail in the so-called ‘cathedral of the sailing skate’.
The other sailor from Badalona located in the top-10 second favorites is Xavier Recasens, with 32% of citations that place him in fifth place in the table. Recasens is another veteran contender for the second category regional title, as well as the pass to the first category and who has also entered the fight for the victories of said category in Badalona, along with Contreras and Schuon.
The third place in the top-10 of the second category goes to the skater from the Barcelona Swimming Club, Miquel Àngel Alonso, ranked third in the second category in the European Cup last year, and who was cited in the vote 36% of the time .
After that triplet, in fourth place, is the champion of the 2022 Catalan Cup, Jordi Sánchez, from Club de Mar Calafell, who this 2022 competes for the first time in a Catalan Sailing Skate Championship. Note that Sánchez is not a neophyte of regattas. In his history there are important regional, state and even international titles in catamaran-type boats. The skipper of ‘Abordo’ attends this championship highly motivated.
