The Congress of Deputies votes in favor of eliminating masks from interior spaces

The Congress of Deputies has voted in favor of removing masks from interior spaces

(31-3-2022) The Congress of Deputies has approved a motion agreed by Ciudadanos with the PSOE that urges the Spanish Government to abolish the mandatory use of masks indoors, yes, when advised by the health authorities.

The mandatory use of masks inside gyms and other closed spaces could have its days numbered. The Congress of Deputies has voted this Thursday in favor of a motion promoted by Ciudadanos that urges the Spanish Government to abolish the compulsory nature of its use. Of course, as long as “the scientific community and the health authorities advise it”. In other words, the agreement is not binding and does not oblige the Executive of Pedro Sánchez to adopt this measure immediately.

The vote has gone ahead with 187 votes in favor (PSOE, Ciudadanos and Vox); 94 votes against (PP and PNV) and the abstention of United We Can and ERC, among other formations. In other words, the two governing parties have voted differently. According to the vote, the Socialist Party itself urges itself (the Government) to withdraw the masks. This vote comes just two days after last Tuesday the same Congress voted against a non-law proposal presented by Vox that urged the Government to eliminate the mandatory use of masks in interior spaces “immediately”.

“We are going to go step by step, taking measures from prudence, from progressiveness and from gradualness,” said the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, two days ago. Pedro Sánchez, for his part, stated a few days ago that this measure would arrive “very soon”, without specifying any specific date. The Spanish president, yes, promised to “accelerate that withdrawal.” From Ciudadanos they trust that now the Executive will not disobey what its own parliamentary group has suggested. The power to remove masks from interior spaces falls solely and exclusively to the Spanish Government.

The two points of the motion

The motion consists of two points. The first urges the Government to eliminate the mandatory use of masks indoors, “in line with scientific evidence, with the epidemiological situation and with a comparative perspective.”

The second, which is the contribution of the PSOE, calls on it to take the appropriate steps to address the “reconsideration” of the measures to contain the covid pandemic within the framework of the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System. It is likely that this issue will be addressed at the meeting of the Interterritorial Council scheduled for next April 6 between representatives of the Ministry of Health and the different autonomous communities.
