The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands has doubled the budget for the call for sponsorships to celebrate large events organized by private entities. The public company Tourism of the Canary Islands will allocate a total of 3.3 million euros to promote 24 sporting and cultural events, all of them of tourist interest.

This is the first call that Turismo de Canarias has launched to sponsor this type of large-scale event, which has a budget of more than 375,000 euros. The Ministry sponsors up to 40% or a maximum of 150,000 euros of the projects that have obtained the highest score, according to the requirements included in the bases. Among these is the obligation to have a sustainability report that guarantees integrated and quality actions and measures.

The Minister of Tourism, Yaiza Castilla, highlights the important economic commitment that is being made to “continue to consolidate a complete agenda of activities that fulfills the dual role of expanding the offer of the Canary Islands destination, as it is a great pole of attraction for tourists. , in addition to becoming a benchmark for Canarian residents”.

9.3 million euros for the whole of the year

In total, in 2022 Tourism of the Canary Islands allocates 9.3 million euros for four different calls: two to sponsor events of private entities (5 million euros), one for the acts of public entities (1 million euros) and another for large private sector events (3.3 million euros).

Already in 2021, three calls for sponsorship were launched that allowed a total of 190 events to be held on the eight islands, almost all organized by private companies, to which the Ministry allocated an amount of 4.7 million.

“By promoting the celebration of these events, we promote activity and employment in the Canarian tourism sector, an objective that we undoubtedly fulfilled, taking into account the success of participation that we obtained last year”, explains Castilla.

A success that, as stated by the managing director of Tourism of the Canary Islands, José Juan Lorenzo, “has made it possible to identify the agenda of events held in the Canary Islands, collaborate to improve their financing and make them more accessible to tourists in order to improve their experience in the destination”, he assures.

The major sponsored events will be held until November 30 and must meet the objective of improving the tourism competitiveness of the islands and the strategic reactivation of the sector.

In addition, it is required that the acts meet the objective of promoting the arrival of tourists to the archipelago in order to favor the process of tourist revitalization. Another requirement is that the organization and holding of the events include the incorporation of some measure of a social nature, such as the hiring of a greater number of companies or personnel for its execution or the hiring of people with disabilities or in situations of special difficulty. to access employment.

Other aspects that have been assessed to grant sponsorship is the incorporation of other sectors that make up the tourism value chain, the participation of the population and regional business, the impact on the image of the Canary Islands or the innovative nature and repercussion social, economic and environmental.

The sponsorship of major events is co-financed by European funds through the REACT-EU Fund, which is part of a broader European aid package called Next Generation.
