SodaStream: How does the soda maker work?

The products of the company SodaStream have enjoyed great popularity for years and are among the absolute bestsellers when it comes to soda makers. The Crystal models bubble up in glass carafes instead of plastic bottles, which can be beneficial in terms of both health and taste. The SodaStream Crystal 2.0 is a little better processed compared to its predecessor and the CO2 filling is minimally easier. The latest addition to the SodaStream family is the duo model, which can bubble in both glass and plastic bottles.

The principle of sparkling water is simply explained: you fill a carafe with tap water, ideally cool it in the refrigerator and then fill the bottle with carbon dioxide at the push of a button in the SodaStream. Here, compressed CO2 is put into the bottle and you get the best quality sparkling water. Since tap water is tested intensively in Germany and has an excellent sensory quality, there is no disadvantage compared to bottled water. This saves you not only lugging boxes, but also money: One CO2 cylinder is enough for around 60 liters of water – that corresponds to 5 boxes of 12 × 1 liter of mineral water. In addition, the environment is protected, because unlike bottled mineral water, the cool water does not have to be unnecessarily transported through the republic. If you want to read how the bubbling works exactly, we have provided the operating instructions for you here.

The exchangeable CO2 cylinders are standardized and work with all common bubblers. They can be exchanged cheaply in more and more shops, including hardware stores, drug stores and supermarkets. The costs for the per cylinder are usually 5 to 10 euros when replacing – the 5 water tanks are significantly more expensive in comparison. If you buy another cylinder as a replacement, you have to add around 15 to 20 euros bottle deposit.

If you don't feel like having plain sparkling water, you can refine your drink with various syrups after the sparkling water. The variety of flavors ranges from simple juices to cola – there really is something for everyone.
