The seventy years of reign of Queen Elizabeth II

Born in London on April 21, 1926, Elizabeth II became queen at the age of 25, on the death of her father George VI. The coronation ceremony of June 2, 1953 broke with tradition, because it was the first to be broadcast on television: thanks to an intuition of Philip of Edinburghher husband since November 20, 1947, who would remain by her side all his life.

With a duration of 70 years and 214 days, the reign of Elizabeth II is the longest in British history: in 2015 she broke the previous record of 63 years, 7 months and 3 days set by her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria. Seventy years in which you, by virtue of your role as head of state, have conferred the position on fifteen prime ministers, from Winston Churchill in the 1950s to Margareth Thatcher in the 1980s, to Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson. The latest appointment dates back to 6 September: it is that of Liz Truss, the new conservative prime minister.

A personality that has gone through a century of history

Without ever becoming politically unbalanced, as her super partes role required her, Queen Elizabeth II went through a century of history. There was during the Suez crisis of the 1950s which marked the UK’s decline on the international stage, leading to the progressive decolonization of what had once been the British Empire. It was there in 1973 when the UK joined the European Communityand there was in 2016 when citizens came together for Brexit.

The war generation knew that the best way to honor those who didn’t return was to make sure it didn’t happen again. The greatest tribute to their sacrifice is that the countries that were once sworn enemies are now friends, working side by side for the peace, health and prosperity of us all.
