Large cast of favorites in the Catalan Cup 2022

Admin

4-29-2022). A few hours before the start of the fifth edition of the Catalan Sailing Skate Cup, which will be held at the Badalona Swimming Club (senior category) and at the Patí Vela Barcelona Club (junior category) this weekend, the number of registered overall is close to 60 sailors.

Since the celebration of the 2018 Spanish Championship organized by the Club Natació Badalona, such an abundant participation of the senior sailing fleet of this entity had not been recorded again in a grand slam such as this 2022 Catalan Cup that will start tomorrow, Saturday. April 30, and will last until Sunday, May 1. If in the Spanish Championship of that 2018 the number of sailors of the Club Natació Badalona amounted to 25 sailors, on this occasion, when last minute registrations could still be registered, the figure is even higher. Specifically, 28 sailors from the Club Natació Badalona are already registered, of which 11 are from the first category and the remaining 17 from the second. Without a doubt, the encouragement for participation by the club’s commodore, Lea Sitjà, and the ‘collegiate captains’ of the fleet, Gottfried Schuon and Xavier Recasens, must have been really intense.

Everything seems to indicate that, as CMDsport pointed out last Wednesday, the skaters of the Badalona Swimming Club are not willing in this Cup for what happened in that 2018 Spanish Championship to happen again in which, despite a very large participation of sailors from the club the podium places were taken by sailors from other clubs. Oriol Mahiques, from Club Nàutic Sitges, was in charge of winning the championship; Xavier Roca, from Club de Mar Sitges, took the runner-up; and Quim Esteba, from Club Nàutic Tamariu, took third place.

The host fleet on that occasion, the last in which the Club Natació Badalona organized one of the grand slams of the class, placed up to four of its sailors in the top-10, but despite this, those results were not enough.

ONLY THE SECOND HAVE TOUCHED THE PODIUM

In this 2022 Catalan Cup, the Badalona Swimming Club can remove that painful thorn from 2018. And for this it contributes up to 57% of the total participating senior fleet (so far).

Resources are not lacking. Among his first swords there are up to four champions of Spain (Batlleriá, Carles Crespo, Pere Crespo and Peco Mulet), two of whom are also bi-state champions (Carles Crespo and Peco Mulet). Likewise, there are other figures such as Jordi Giménez, Ferran Gubern, Joaquim Roig, Jordi Servat, or Lea Sitjà, among others, who will surely put all the meat on the grill.

On the other hand, in the second category, the senior fleet of the Club Natació Badalona has other top swashbucklers such as Gottfried Schuon (Spanish champion of the second category this 2022), Xavier Recasens or Gregori Contreras, among others, all of them skippers that they have coveted for a long time. the pass to first and, everything seems to indicate, that they are getting closer to achieving it.

Therefore, there are theoretical options to capture podium places in this 2022 Catalan Cup, both in the first and in the second… and to spare, as well as to improve the results of the four previous editions. Not in vain, in the editions held to date of the Catalan Cup, no sailor from Badalona has ever been on the first category podium, and the greatest successes have been achieved by the second category sailors of the Ignasi Sagristá entity (champion of the second in 2018) and Xavier Recasens (third second in last year’s edition).

FAVORITES ARE NOT MISSING

But despite the certain advantage that comes with talent backed by results and playing at home, there are more bosses in this Catalan Cup who attend it with serious chances of winning the absolute classification, depending on the conditions that are registered. There they are, for example, Anna Pujol, from the Barcelona Swimming Club; o Xavier Roca, from Club de Mar Sitges and winner of the 2017 edition; o Tony García, from Club Nàutic Tamariu, winner of the 2019 edition; or Oriol Martí, from Club Patí Vela Barcelona, who has started his debut this year in first class winning the Somorrostro Trophy and is doing very well.

Also in the second category are patrons to consider such as Albert Kirchner, from the Club Natació Badalona; or his club mate, Miquel Angel Alonso; or Ricard Plaza, from the Club Nàutic Sitges; or Rafael Perera, from the Barcelona Swimming Club; or Jaume Borrás, from Club Vela Sant Antoni.

For all these reasons, nothing is decided and, it is already known: regattas have the virtue of teaching humility to all those who participate in them.

For now, on the ‘mat’, there are a total of 49 senior sailors for this 2022 Catalan Cup from 12 clubs. The hegemony of participants falls, for now, to the second category employers who are 27, compared to the 22 first category.

GOOD FIGURES. The 49 senior registered so far represent the second edition of the Catalan Cup with the largest number of sailors in this modality. The 17 juniors registered so far equal the participation record registered in the 2019 edition. FAVORITES ALSO IN JUNIOR

For its part, the Club Patí Vela Barcelona will organize the Catalan Cup for junior sailing. The dates will be the same as for the seniors, that is, from April 30 to May 1.

So far, 17 sailors from six clubs have registered. The largest delegation is that of the Club Nàutic Sitges, with five sailors. It is followed by that of the host club, Club Patí Vela Barcelona, with four skaters.

In this edition, the Club Nàutic Sitges has the option for one of its sailors to win the Junior Catalan Cup, something that has not happened in previous editions so far.

Among the names of favorites that sound in the Junior Catalan Cup 2022, it is worth highlighting Marc Giralt, Champion of Catalonia for children in 2021 and Absolute Runner-up of Spain in the same year, as well as his teammate, Jordi Sans, champion of the Cup of Children’s Europe 2021.

On the other hand, it will be necessary to see how the promise of the Club Mar i Vent de Canet, Tom Rondeau, progresses, a sailor who, despite his youth, already made some really outstanding tasks last year.

The registration fees for the junior modality have been priced at 15 euros per sailor.

Registration can be done online through the link to the 2022 Catalan Cup for junior sailing.
