Combining multiple technologies, Wayra, the project of the French EDF Renewables will be located in the Taltal Wind Reserve, in the Antofagasta region, reaching a total installed power of 614 MW.
Santiago de Chile.- EDF Renewables Chile reported the admissibility of the Environmental Impact Study of the Wayra project. This new wind and solar power generation park will be located within the Taltal Wind Reserve Zone, in the Antofagasta region, approximately 38 kilometers east of Paposo.
The project considers 52 wind turbines of up to 8 MW of nominal power each, totaling 416 MW, and three zones of solar panels totaling 198 MW, resulting in a total installed power of 614 MW, which will be injected into the National Electric System ( SEN) through a high voltage line that will be connected to the Parinas substation. Thus, the energy produced by the project will supply energy to more than 100,000 homes.
In addition, the park includes the installation and assembly of an energy storage system using modular lithium-ion batteries that will provide a storage capacity of about 300 MWh per cycle.
Regarding this new project, Jean-Christophe Puech, CEO of EDF Renewables Chile, stated that “we are excited to start the process of environmental processing of the Wayra project, an initiative that will seek to take advantage of the exceptional resources of the northern part of the country to promote a project hybrid that will strengthen the contribution of clean and renewable energy generation to the National Electric System, both day and night. This means a new and important step in EDF Renewables’ commitment to collaborate with Chile’s energy transition, through the construction and development of new renewable projects that are correctly integrated into their human and environmental surroundings”.
The Wayra project is located in the Taltal Wind Reserve, on a public land of 2,600 hectares that was tendered in 2020 by the Ministry of National Assets. The works of the project will cover an approximate surface of 250 hectares and consider an investment close to 623 million dollars.
