Windows 11 has completely updated the context menu or right mouse button in Windows 11 and replaced it with a completely new menu. While this new redesign has removed some unnecessary shortcuts and options, the new look can be a bit overwhelming at first. Fortunately, it can be easily customized to suit your needs.

How to customize the context menu in Windows 11

There are two ways to do it. You can go back to the old Windows 10 style context menu and add your favorite apps list. Or you can add the new apps directly. The only downside is that the apps will appear when you click Show more options.

Either way, you can add and remove apps as per your preference.

Here's how to change and customize the context menu in Windows 11.

How to recover the previous context menu in Windows 11

The 'Show more options' option is annoying. For example, I have to click multiple times to send a file to my phone. And when that happens a dozen times a day, it can get annoying.

There are two ways to get back the old Windows 10 context menu. You can edit the Registry Editor entries. Or you can modify the registry keys directly through the command prompt. The second step is easy.

The Windows Registry Editor is the hub for all Windows settings. And if you know the correct key and value, you can customize some parts of your PC according to your preferences.

However, editing the Registry Editor is not child's play, and messing with the wrong set of keys and values can harm your computer.

Note : Make a backup copy of Registry Editor before making changes.

Step 1: Click the Windows button, type regedit, and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.

Step 2: Navigate to the following path:

 HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClassesCLSID

Step 3: Once the path opens, right-click and select New> Key.

Step 4: Select the newly created key and then right-click on the right pane and choose New> Key.

Now, rename the newly created key to the following name,

Alternative path: via command prompt

If you don't want to mess around with keys and values, you can add the keys directly through the command prompt.

Step 1 : Open the command prompt and paste the following command:

 reg add "HKCUSoftwareClassesCLSID {86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2} InprocServer32" / f / ve

This simple action will add both keys in the correct sequence.

Step 2 : Restart the computer and that's it.

This is a much faster method.

How to add and customize the context menu

Once you have the above context menu, you can tweak it to add a couple of your frequently used apps. Applications will appear in the first menu, saving you time in the long run.

Please note that you can add only applications and not folders and files. For the latter, you should take the help of the taskbar.

Like the previous method, adding applications to the context menu in Windows 11 also involves editing the Registry entries. We will add two applications in our example, namely Notepad and Calculator.

Step 1 : Open Registry Editor and navigate to the path below:

Note : To remove an application from the context menu in Windows 11, delete the entries in the Shell folder.

Again, we recommend that you make a backup before deleting any keys.

You can also add the applications directly to the context menu in Windows 11 without going back to the previous menu,

The only limitation is that they will be available only when you click Show more options.

Old and new

This is how you can customize the context menu in Windows 11. The default menu looks nice but restrictive. It takes time to get used to. You can customize it and put frequently used apps and options there.
