Functionality allows hybridizing a photovoltaic plant with a battery storage system – Awdhesh







The new Rated Power function allows users to have the basic engineering -layout, electrical connection and integration with the substation- and obtain the necessary documents that define the battery system, coupled to AC in their photovoltaic projects.

Madrid Spain.- In its effort to maximize the potential of clean energy to fight climate change through technology, RatedPower has integrated a new function that allows photovoltaic plants to be hybridized with an alternating current coupled battery storage system.

“We are very pleased to launch the basic engineering of the battery storage system. It will become a fundamental piece of our entire commercial strategy. This new function of pvDesign is the first step to offer a complete PV-BESS hybrid solution to our customers”, says Ignacio Álvarez, Product Manager of RatedPower.

Large-scale photovoltaic solar plants and storage systems

IRENA estimates that the deployment of large-scale storage systems in energy markets will increase by 40% each year until 2025. The growing popularity of battery energy storage systems is due to several reasons:

It is a solution to overcome the obstacles caused by the intermittent production of renewable energy. Battery storage helps provide cheaper, reliable electricity to isolated grids and off-grid communities that would otherwise rely on expensive and polluting fossil fuels such as diesel. NREL, in its report “Cost Projections for Utility-Scale Battery Storage,” states that battery prices have fallen significantly and will continue to do so. From 2010 to 2019, battery prices have dropped 87%, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Predictions say that by 2030, prices will drop by 42.7%. In RatedPower’s solar and renewable energy research report: “What’s in store for 2022”, over 100 solar industry professionals shared their views on the market. The majority believe that battery storage and green hydrogen have the greatest potential to be successfully implemented worldwide by 2030, with 64% of them identifying batteries. Looking ahead, more than half of respondents said storage options (57%) need more resources in the coming year.

“The synergies between storage and photovoltaics are very consistent. The predictable daily production cycle of a solar photovoltaic plant is well aligned with the charging and discharging needs of the battery. With the rise of renewable energy, battery storage plays a key role in successfully balancing the load 24 hours a day,” says Álvarez.

BESS software for utility-scale PV players

RatedPower customers can now design an AC coupled BESS. Through its BESS software module, storage can be included in new designs or existing projects.

Traditionally, battery sizing is based on the estimated power rating of the PV plant, without taking into account available land, rated capacity, or electrical requirements.

RatedPower has inverted the approach to make the most of the area in which the batteries are placed and to take into account the duration of the supply chain or the optimization of capacity.

pvDesign automatically locates the battery containers and transformation centers in the defined location. It will take into account the hours of supply of the batteries, it will calculate the length of the cables and it will carry out earthworks. It will also dimension the interconnection installation.
