Aragon refuses to sign the agreement for the 2030 Olympics

Aragon demands an equitable distribution of the venues of the 2030 Olympic Games

(29-3-2022) The president of Aragon, Javier Lambán, refuses to sign the agreement to share the venues for the candidacy for the 2030 Winter Olympics. They demand an equitable distribution and will not meet with the COE this Friday .

The Spanish candidacy for the 2030 Winter Olympics is still far from a definitive agreement between all parties. Despite the fact that yesterday Monday the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) confirmed having reached a “technical agreement” with Catalonia and Aragon for the distribution of the venues, this Tuesday the president of the latter community, Javier Lambán, has distanced himself and has warned that he will not sign it. He has also announced that he will not go to the meeting scheduled for this Friday with the president of the COE, Alejandro Blanco.

In a press conference held in Zaragoza, Lambán has assured that he does not agree with a distribution that was agreed last week at a meeting of the technical commission -where there are representatives of the Aragonese executive-. The president of Aragon rejects the COE proposal, which has already been approved by the governments of Catalonia and Spain, because he considers that the distribution of evidence “is not balanced.”

Lambán considers that the entity of the modalities that Catalonia would have “clearly favors” this community. According to the COE document, in Catalonia the downhill, supergiant, giant and slamom alpine skiing events would be held (in La Molina-Masella); and those of snowboard and freestyle (Baqueira Beret). It remains to be seen if Boí Taüll will host ski touring. Ice hockey would be held at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona.

The Aragonese Pyrenees, for its part, would be the venue for the biathlon and cross-country skiing, since, unlike Catalonia, it does have facilities below 1,800 metres. It also aims to be the headquarters of curling (Jaca) and figure skating and long and short track speed (Zaragoza). The opening and closing ceremonies would be divided between Barcelona and Zaragoza.

Events such as bobsleigh, skeleton, luge, ski jumping and Nordic combined would be held outside of Spain, with a venue to be determined.
